The seeds produce a fine oil and are sometimes added to bread and cakes. If eaten in large quantities common poppy is poisonous to livestock, the active principle is rhoeadene. The different poppy species often occur together but few natural hybrids have been found. Common poppy populations that have developed resistance to certain herbicides have been recorded. ![]() Albino and tricotyledonous seedlings appear occasionally. Leaf shape and hairiness are very variable characters. Numerous forms and varieties have been recognised. Soil seedbank numbers of between 2.5 and 20 million seeds per ha have been recorded for common poppy in vegetable fields in the UK. It is often associated with soil of pH 6.0 to 8.0. Common poppy is a frequent weed of cornfields on light, dry, sandy and gravely soils, and to a lesser extent on heavy land. It is not recorded above 1,000 ft in Britain. It occurs mainly in England and SE Scotland but is rarer in Wales and much of Scotland. munita suggests "armed as in munitions".Bledewort, corn poppy, corn rose, field poppy, redweed, thunder flower Latin namesĬommon poppy is an annual or overwintering weed native in arable land, roadsides, waste places and other disturbed habitats. Argemone means "cataract of the eye", and this hints at one of those uses. Notwithstanding this, like other poisonous plants, its lore includes medicinal uses. Prickly spines and a sap that make you vomit are a winning combination helping this plant survive and discourage animals from eating its leaves. Sap from this plant can be poisonous to humans and animals. ![]() Strikingly, the flowers from both plants look like fried eggs served sunny side up. Flowers from both species viewed sided by side would show why the Matilija Poppy has the largest flowers in this plant family. The Pistil is dark on Prickly Poppy versus yellow on the Matilija Poppy. Flowers do appear similar to Matilija Poppies with slight differences. The flowers are a bit smaller than the Matilija Poppy - 130mm versus 200mm. Surrounding the pistil are a couple of hundred yellow to orange stamens. Prickly poppy has flowers with 4 or 6 white crinkly petals, three green sepals, yellow centers and dark colored pistil. I saw a number of these plants in Cheseboro Canyon in April 2007, a year and a half after fire swept through the area. It commonly blooms from April through August in this area and can be a fire follower. The plant has blue green leaves and stems, with spines throughout - leaves, fruits and stems! Prickly Poppy favors an especially dry habitat of sandy or gravelly soil. The other clue is that the Matilija Poppy grows a lot taller than this plant - up to 15 feet versus five feet. While the flowers are definitely similar, the spiny foliage of the prickly poppy should be a dead giveaway to tell these two apart. This plant had me fooled when I photographed it - one look at its inflorescence and I thought I was looking at Matilija Poppy. The plant sprouts from seed and when it takes hold in the soil it can grow quite aggressively. This plant is herbaceous (green stems versus woody stems). Prickly Poppy - Argemone munita is considered a short lived perennial or an Annual.
